ANZAC

Anzac Service at Ruapotaka

30 crosses laying in lines on the grassy field on a sunny Friday afternoon.

One by one Mr Reid inserted the 30 crosses in the grass that were given to our school by the RSA to commemorate those who fought for our freedom.  It was not only for those who fought in  World  War One but also in many other wars and those who have lost their lives.

All classes in our school were waiting patiently for their class number to be announced by Mrs Vickers on the speaker to make our way outside. Finally all the classes were instructed to make our way to the Anzac Assembly which was on the steep bank right outside our classroom, Room 12.

Right after everyone was seated on the grass our Principal Mrs Vickers informed us why we were there and why we had a special assembly. She said, “We are here to commemorate soldiers who fought for our country and it is the 100th Anniversary which is very important”.

Next to speak was the Senior Syndicate. The eldest year eights (us) had to read the introductory ‘Fields of Remembrance’. This was read by Miria. The following speaker was Sini who read out with pride a well known Anzac poem called ‘Flanders Fields’. Sini’s younger brother in Room 10, who was a year 5 student (nine years old) also read out a poem which he wrote all by himself.
Later on was it was the Junior School’s turn. They had one student (Jessica) from Room Six who read out a poem. With expression she read, “Anzac poppy small and sweet, crushed beneath the soldiers feet, fragile petals red as blood, spilled upon the treacherous mud”.

Last of all was the Bugle Call. Before the bugle call could start there had to be silence and we had to all stand up, be still and pay our respects. Once the Bugle call finished everyone sat down. We waited for our teachers to instruct us to go back to our classes. At the end Mrs Vickers thanked us for being there and having respect for Anzac.

As each year passes no matter how long ago it happened New Zealand, Australia and Turkey will never forget Anzac day as well as what it stands for: Australia, New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC)

'A' Grade Students

Our A Grade Certificate

We were overwhelmed that our names were announced by Mrs Golder.
We worked really hard to achieve at least five or more A grades in our homework. We shook our teachers hand proudly and the audience applauded us. We were pleased that we were awarded with A grade certificates. Our parents are very glad that we worked hard in Term One.

Our next goal is to get A grades for the rest of the year and to succeed so that we can have a better education. Every week we get Year 8 homework and usually we get A or better. Only six students were awarded with A Grade Certificates who were

Self Manager Award

Superb Self Management Award

At the syndicate assembly I received a Superb Self Management Award for showing discipline, controlling my behaviour and showing good behavior in front of the other students. The award was unlimited from Monday to Friday so you had to be good the whole week to earn that certificate. I worked so hard to get that award. I had to show excellence in  behaviour wherever I went. Well, because I was showing superb self discipline I was awarded a discipline award.

Syndicate Assembly Awards

I received an award for being responsible and showing respect. I have being trying my hardest to be responsible and respectful in class and to other people. When I received my award I knew that I was showing respect to my classmates. Mika

I received my certificate for being an Independent learner. I have been trying my hardest to work independently. I have noticed that if you work by yourself you get more work completed. Estah

Duffy Book Award

My Duffy Award
On the 9th of March at assembly I was awarded with a book for ‘Caught Being Good” at Reading. I was very impressed with myself because I always enjoy a good book. I love reading especially when I have a lot of them to read. Mrs Golder chose me because I did my homework reading all the time.

My award was a book given by Duffy who supports our school. The book awarded to me is called ‘ROCCO’. I still yet have to read it all. It says that the character was transported to another time and place.

Everyday I read at least half a chapter.  I have plenty of time to read it. I love my Duffy Books!

Inter-school Softball

It was steaming hot, as we waited for all the schools to arrive at the tournament. The day was full of intensity, excitement and happiness. It was great to see all the different competitors competing against each other.

Our first game was against Glen Innes Intermediate School. They were  very competitive, well skilled and fast. The pitcher was an expert at pitching and their signals were on point but unfortunately we lost.

Our next game was against St. Patricks.  We beat them by five to four home runs. They were an awesome challenge and they had a great attitude even when they lost.

Our last game was against Panmure Bridge School. If we had won this game then we would have made it into the finals against Glen Innes Intermediate. We had an accident during the game but no one was badly injured so we continued playing. We also won this game and we were excited for the finals.

During the finals against Glen Innes Intermediate the game was difficult because their hits were astonishing and their catching skills were accurate and fast. Our hard work didn’t pay off so we lost 5 - 0. It was an overwhelming experience competing in the Inter School Softball.
